Volvo’s Design Boss Wins Prestigious Award from Autocar

By the time Thomas Ingenlath joined the Volvo design team as head in 2012, he already had worked for three carmakers, and served as head of design for two of them. He got to work immediately, and played a crucial role in developing the exterior and interior stylings of models like the S90 and XC60. With such a broad portfolio, we wonder what took Autocar so long in awarding him “Design Hero” status.

But that’s just the honor that Ingenlath received from Autocar this year. In his five year stint at our preferred automaker, he has brought distinctly Scandinavian design cues to the modern Volvo lineup. This style of design favors uncluttered, simple lines, controlled surfaces, and evocative materials. Sit in any recently-redesigned model, and you’ll find his touch—the Nappa, Charcoal, Brown leathers, the aluminum mesh or wood inlays, and diamond cut controls are all part of Ingenlath’s influence.
